Out of the Blue

Essay 582 • Mar 30th 2025

Who knows what I was doing that day. Taking a stroll through our neighborhood with my daughter, perhaps in search of a cup of coffee? I bumped into my friend, Shannon, quite unexpectedly. We'd met years ago through the Venice-born skate collective, GrlSwirl. And thanks to our haphazard encounter, we made a plan to take some photos together.

I gathered ideas I had been dreaming up for awhile, and she brought along an incredible wardrobe. We each arrived with open minds and a hopeful spirit. It’s always refreshing to take a break from your own perspective for a few hours, embrace a character, radiate confidence, and express yourself in a secure setting—just a little time to be whimsical and carefree.

Time marches on, of course. Always does. Life has unfolded in various ways, and it's certainly been a challenging season. Experiences like this shoot are meant for a particular time; they ignite motivation, bestow precious wisdom, and offer exactly what you need in that moment.

All it takes is one shift in momentum—like the spontaneity of encountering an old friend on the street—for inspiration to make itself known instantly. I always remind myself to remain receptive. You never know what might come of that.
