Saint Joseph’s Night

Although it is not known when the tradition of masking on St. Joseph's Night began, the sight of Black Masking Indians suiting up on this occasion dates back to before the First World War.

The 9th Ward Black Hatchet Tribe is one of the biggest in New Orleans. On this evening, they, along with the other Black Masking tribes, fill the streets of New Orleans with their traditional suits and songs that celebrate generations of tradition.
















 

Chris Scheurich is a born and bred New Orleanian with a focus on fashion and documentary photography. He first became enamored with life behind the lens as a young child, watching his father, a cultural photographer, document the fascinating characters who populate this unique city.
