The Hokuloa Outrigger Club is a rising force in the Southern California Outrigger Canoe Association (SCORA). The pinnacle race of the season is a grueling 30 mile open ocean race from Newport Beach to Avalon Harbor on Catalina Island's south eastern side. This essay documents the journey of the men and women of Hokuloa as they prepare for and compete in this race.






























 

Nate Hoffman dropped out of college to study photography, then he dropped out of photography school to move to Los Angeles and learn about real photography; he is currently in the process of unlearning everything he was taught in photo school.
