Manok Panabong

Essay 522 • Feb 28th 2023

When I was about 10 years old my grandfather used to bring me to a tabo (a gathering) once/twice per year in the Philippines to buy manok (rooster) for fiestas in our barangay. These photos were taken during my visit in the Philippines after almost 8 years of not being home.

Manok Panabong means "Fighting Rooster".

My name is Junell Tanio, I am a photographer born in Cebu City, Philippines. I am a first-generation immigrant who moved America 10 years ago and am currently based in Brooklyn, New York.
