I wanted to convey something simple and tender with this portrait series. Jamillah isn't a ballerina, but she does speak Spanish, loves the Atlanta Braves, and has eyes full of wonder. I wanted the focus to be on her, not bold colors, makeup or props.

I looked to photographer Viviane Sassen for inspiration, using all natural light and emphasizing contrast. This shoot was a chance to experiment with capturing human expression while also trying to push myself into new territory. "Focused playtime" if you will.
