Imagined Order

Imagined Order is an ongoing photographic series set in the Dominican Republic that explores magical thinking, folklore, and the symbolic charge of everyday life. Moving between documentary observation and staged intervention, the work reflects on how spirituality, desire, religion, and inherited systems of belief shape the way reality is perceived and remembered.

Rather than portraying the Caribbean through familiarity or spectacle, the series constructs a more unstable and interior landscape ; one where bodies, animals, gestures, and natural elements become emotionally and spiritually charged. In these images, the ordinary slips into a mythic register: a figure may feel like an apparition, a domestic scene like ritual, a landscape like prophecy.

Rooted in a personal reading of Dominican culture, Imagined Order draws from a visual world where Catholicism, superstition, sensuality, and myth coexist. The series is interested in how fantasy is not separate from reality, but woven into its texture shaping how intimacy, fear, beauty, and belief are lived and imagined.

Karla Read is a Dominican photographer and visual director based in Mexico City, whose work is shaped by the imagery and cultural tensions of the Caribbean. Her practice explores the body as a symbolic territory where identity, memory, and transformation converge,

taking as a starting point the relationship between the ritual, the everyday, and the sensory within her Afro-Caribbean context.

Trained in Buenos Aires and deeply connected to her roots, her work emerges from a personal investigation into her cultural heritage, approaching the Caribbean not as an idealized place, but as a complex space where contradictions, symbolic systems, and hybrid forms of expression coexist.

Her visual language exists in a liminal space between the artistic and the commercial, combining a refined aesthetic with a more intuitive and emotional approach. Through the use of the body, color, and landscape, she constructs images that move between the tangible and the abstract, proposing new forms of representation beyond the literal.
