Beauty in the Shadow

Essay 358 • Dec 10th 2018

Shadows: Sometimes referred to as the darker parts of our psyche, the parts less seen.
“Meet me,
Won’t you meet me here?
I just want to be seen.
Seen here,
In my truth,
In my wholeness.
Not just the strength and the happiness,
But the softness, the fear, the vulnerability, the desire.
The desire to be me,
Whole, free and alive.”

“Breaking to be reborn.
I must meet all parts of myself
To become whole
And I must be seen in this.
From here,
I can breathe more freely
I can relax into presence
Relax into life.
I can speak, move, create and love
Freely.
Senses open.
This is being truly alive.”

Dane Peterson
As an accomplished surfer in his youth, Dane Peterson traveled the world. It was the unique people and places he encountered along the way that inevitably lead him to first pick up a camera and begin documenting his journey. In that process, he developed an uncanny knack for finding beauty in the subtleties that surrounded him. Dane now lives and breathes his art. Residing on the Westside of Los Angeles, he is primarily focused on a variety of analog film mediums that act not only as his tools but also as his inspiration.
